State Assessments

ArtSpace is a public charter school and is required to participate in the North Carolina testing program. ArtSpace believes that assessments provide an important measure of student growth and achievement. It is one metric of the many that school staff use to support students and analyze instruction.

Most importantly, ArtSpace believes that students are far more than a test could ever measure. They are vibrant individuals, each with their own unique talent, passions, and potential. They are artists, explorers, learners, performers, and so much more. While assessments are markers of progress, they do not measure creativity, kindness, empathy, and brilliance.

Overview

The North Carolina End-of-Grade (EOG) Tests are designed to measure student performance on the goals, objectives, and grade-level competencies specified in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

  • Mathematics (Grades 3–8)
  • Reading (Grades 3–8)
  • Science (Grades 5 and 8)

Purpose

The General Assembly GCS 115C-174.10T specified the purpose of the North Carolina State Testing Program as:

  • “(i) to assure that all high school graduates possess those minimum skills and that knowledge thought necessary to function as a member of society;
  • (ii) to provide a means of identifying strengths and weaknesses in the education process in order to improve instructional delivery; and
  • (iii) to establish additional means for making the education system at the State, local, and school levels accountable to the public for results.”

Schedule

Test schedules are set annually with the school calendar and communicated with families in the spring through class newsletters, direct email, This Week school newsletter, and the website event calendar.
